Certain azo compounds such as azobisisobutyronitrile can also photolytically cleave, forming two alkyl radicals and nitrogen gas. These free radicals can now promote other reactions, thus acting as photoinitiators. Peroxides, nitrogen dioxides, and molecular oxygen are key atmospheric photoinitiators.
